Representations of Identity Between Purity and Hybridity in the Contemporary Palestinian Novel. A Postcolonial Reading of Selected Models.

The representation of identity has gained significant prominence in the contemporary Palestinian novel, after the violent trauma suffered by the Palestinian people due to the occupation of their land, and the ensuing campaigns of displacement, dispersion, and uprooting, and the declaration of the State of Israel on their land in 1948. The contemporary Palestinian novel's involvement in a counter-writing strategy against the colonizer, as part of postcolonial literature that sought to re-represent the self and the other in a manner opposite to their representations in the colonial narrative.And while some contemporary Palestinian novels have focused on representing a pure identity as a counter-narrative to the colonizer's attempts to erase and obliterate Palestinian identity, as in the novel (Qina' Lawn al-Sama'- A Mask the Color of the Sky) by Bassem Khandaqji, other novels chose to represent a hybrid identity after finding in "integration" another strategy of the counter-narrative to the colonial narrative, as in the novel (Badlat Ingliziyyah wa Baqarat Yahudiyyah – An English Suit and a Jewish Cow) by Suad Amiry.
