Abstract

This study aimed to explore the extent to which Iraqi digital journalism perceives and engages with issues of sustainable development. The research adopted the descriptive-analytical methodology as the most suitable approach for examining social and media phenomena within their real-world context. A questionnaire was used as the primary tool for data collection, targeting a sample of 50 participants with expertise in media and development.

The findings revealed several key indicators, most notably that Iraqi digital journalism demonstrates a noticeable interest in sustainable development topics, although the depth and comprehensiveness of coverage vary. The majority of respondents indicated that digital journalism addresses all dimensions of development—economic, social, and environmental—and that they rely on various platforms for information, including official websites, social media, and awareness blogs. However, the study also identified significant challenges, such as limited funding, lack of specialized training, and weak coordination with relevant institutions.

Based on these results, the study recommends launching specialized digital platforms focused on sustainable development, providing training programs for journalists, strengthening partnerships between media organizations and development entities, and enhancing media content to ensure balanced coverage of all development dimensions and to raise public awareness .
