Teaching Spanish in an environment like Iraq poses serious challenges that go beyond those typical of teaching foreign languages. The linguistic differences between Arabic and Spanish, the educational challenges and the unique social situation of Iraq are some elements that make access to information and the educational situation that teachers face when teaching Spanish as a foreign language difficult. . It is an educational system marked by decades and that still preserves traditionalist methodologies focused on the development of grammar through manuals designed by different publishers.
This article briefly analyzes the situation and challenges of teaching Spanish in Iraq and addresses some strategies to address, in particular, the spelling competence of Spanish students. We intend to serve as support for Iraqi teachers who teach Spanish as a foreign language (ELE), providing solutions that include the creation of specific teaching materials, collaborative dynamics and pedagogical tools designed to improve the spelling of Arabic speakers.
