Common Spelling Mistakes - Students of the Arabic Language Department at the Faculty of Education at Charmo University as a Model -

Abstract

The research aimed to identify the level of spelling proficiency among students in the Arabic Language Department at the College of Education, Jermuk University, their most common spelling errors, and to identify differences between male and female students in spelling proficiency. To achieve this goal, the researcher used a descriptive survey approach, constructing a test to measure the spelling skills of students in the Arabic Language Department. The researcher relied on a questionnaire and a test. The number of spelling skills measured by the questionnaire and test was (25) skills distributed over (12) items. The research community consisted of (184) male and female students in the Arabic Language Department at the College of Education, Jermuk University. The research sample consisted of (12) male students and (28) female students. They were selected randomly. The research reached a number of results, the most prominent of which are: The most common spelling error among the research sample was in writing the shortened alif and the straight alif, with a percentage of (72%), and the solar (al) is considered the least common error among the sample. The research also found that gender differences have a statistically significant effect on spelling errors among both sexes, as it appears that females committed more spelling errors than males in this test (5.14 versus 4.67), and the differences are highly statistically significant.
