يعد ياقوت الحموي من العلماء الرحالة الجغرافيين البارعين في العديد من العلوم، وكتابه (معجم البلدان) يعتبر أحد المصادر الجغرافية والتاريخية المهمة، استودع فيه مؤلفه الكثير من المعلومات المختصة بالتاريخ، من أخبار وروايات، وقدم رؤية فكرية من خلال تحليله وتفسيره وتعليقاته على تلك الاخبار والروايات، فضلاً عن ذلك فقد أظهر براعة مميزة في كتابه سواء ما كان يختص بأخبار الجغرافية والأثار أو التاريخ، وقد تميز بدقته في التعامل مع الروايات والأخبار التي كان يتناولها، بأسلوب المؤرخ الناجح، فنراه ينتقد الروايات ويشكك بها ويرجح ويقارن فيما بينها، منة أجل تصحيحها ووضعها في سياقها الصحيح
