Abstract

Grammatical examples are the base in constructing and enhancing grammatical rules. These examples are of two kinds: the first are prose examples taken from the Holy Quran, prophetic traditions and other Arabic prose. The second are poetic examples mostly used in grammar books.

The grammarian al-Radhi al-Istrabathi has chosen the approach of depending mostly on examples taken from Prophetic Traditions and Ahl-ul-Bait’s speech (Prophet’s special close relatives). In doing so, he has founded a new approach in grammar. This study focuses on this approach that depends on examples taken from Imam Ali’s speeches and their grammatical functions. The study shows the way in which some particular examples have been introduced to explain one particular matter with their explanation. The functions of these examples are enhancing a grammatical rule, authenticating a grammatical opinion, or rejecting an opinion as well as their role in grammatical dispute.

The study approves that al-Radhi has been successful in his approach. Grammarians should have followed, supported and enlarge his approach for the benefit of Arabic.
