Abstract

Baghdad during the Buyid period (334–447 AH / 945–1055 CE) was one of the leading urban centers of the Islamic world, distinguished by its rich sectarian and cultural diversity, which profoundly shaped its social structure and urban institutions. This study examines the impact of sectarian pluralism on the formation of social relations in Baghdad during this period. It adopts a social history approach, supported by descriptive and analytical methods, drawing upon primary historical sources and relevant modern scholarship. The findings reveal that sectarian diversity extended beyond its religious dimension to become a significant factor in the construction of social identities, the organization of intercommunal relations, and the strengthening of religious and scholarly institutions as networks of social interaction. The study also demonstrates that the Buyid administration managed sectarian diversity in a manner that maintained a degree of social stability despite the persistence of sectarian competition. It concludes that Baghdadi society developed a distinctive model of coexistence in which interaction and competition coexisted, contributing to the continuity of intellectual and cultural activity while preserving the cohesion of the city's social fabric throughout the Buyid era.
