The Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq: An Analytical Study of Their Role in Promoting Islamic and National Unity

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) represent a unique phenomenon in contemporary Iraq. They emerged in response to the al-Jihad al-Kifa’i (Sufficient Defense) fatwa issued by the Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, in 2014, following the existential threat posed by ISIS. This study combines academic analysis with a descriptive approach to examine the role of the PMF in strengthening Islamic and national unity in Iraq. It explores the origins of the PMF, its diverse composition, and its decisive military role in defeating terrorism, as well as the challenges it has faced in institutional integration, arms regulation, and building trust among the components of Iraqi society. The study also discusses the political and social impacts of the PMF and the extent of its commitment to a unifying national discourse. The findings conclude that the PMF constituted a necessary national and religious response that contributed to preserving the Iraqi state. However, its positive role in enhancing national unity depends on the success of fully integrating it into state institutions, regulating its weapons, reinforcing its professional national identity, and consolidating trust among all societal groups
