Abstract

: A considerable number of prominent Arab scientists across various scientific fields, as well as influential political figures, were subjected to assassination operations surrounded by significant ambiguity. These incidents—beginning in the mid-twentieth century and continuing into subsequent decades—reflect a clear escalation in both the scope and sophistication of targeted killings in the Arab world. Over time, the motives behind these assassinations expanded beyond internal conflicts or local political rivalries, taking on distinct regional and international dimensions shaped by the Arab–Israeli conflict, the Cold War, and competing global interests in the Middle East. In later periods, assassination operations grew increasingly precise, organized, and strategically planned, relying on extensive intelligence gathering and systematic surveillance of targeted individuals. In many cases, foreign intelligence agencies were involved, particularly when the continued influence of certain scientific or political figures posed a challenge to external strategic agendas. The methods of assassination also evolved significantly: whereas earlier periods witnessed the use of traditional tools such as swords, poison, and daggers, modern assassinations have relied on advanced firearms, explosive devices, car bombs, snipers, and, at times, covert chemical or biological means. Historical evidence suggests that high-profile cases—such as the assassination of Mahmoud Fahmi al-Nuqrashi in Egypt (1948) and the elimination of several scientists working in sensitive fields such as nuclear and chemical research—cannot be separated from broader regional tensions. The consistent lack of transparency in official investigations and the scarcity of publicly available information have contributed to a persistent sense of ambiguity, reinforcing the belief that many of these assassinations were part of a systematic strategy to neutralize influential Arab elites. These targeted killings produced long-lasting consequences, including the disruption of emerging scientific projects, the weakening of national institutions, and the creation of political and intellectual vacuums whose effects continued for decades. They also contributed to reshaping regional dynamics by introducing the deliberate targeting of intellectuals and decision-makers as an instrument of political pressure and control
