Color in the poetry of Ibrahim bin Yahya Al-Ghazi and Hamed Abdul Samad Al-Basri (A comparative study)

Abstract

         Color plays an effective role in giving poetry a unique aesthetic, providing signals and symbols that express the poet's feelings regarding life's themes and fluctuations, and the most beautiful phenomena of nature. Color is one of the most important elements shaping an artistic image, encompassing artistic, psychological, social, and symbolic connotations. Therefore, color in poetry should be studied by linking it to the context of the poetic text. The poetic context determines its function and effectiveness. It is not a marginal, transient role, but rather plays a central role in the discourse, both semantically and rhetorically, in addition to its aesthetic and imaginative role. Thus, the use of color in poetry has become an urgent necessity, prompting all poets to employ color in their poems. However, their uses of color have varied from one poet to another, depending on their environment and culture. Therefore, this research utilizes the artistic use of color in the poetic texts of the two poets, Ghazzi and Basri, and their unique and skillful use of color to explore this artistic element, one of the most important elements shaping the literary, moral, and sensory image through paintings of the utmost beauty and magnificence. This is achieved by returning to its earliest roots.

          The colors employed by the two poets, and upon which they relied extensively in their poetry, are colors considered essential to the Arabic language: white, black, green, red, and yellow. The research adopted a descriptive and analytical approach to address color terms.
