The Impact of Exposure to Local Satellite Channels on Levels of Political Alienation Among Iraqi Youth

Abstract

The research examined the effects of exposure to local satellite channels on the levels of political alienation among Iraqi youth. The research problem was formulated with a central question: "What is the relationship between exposure to local satellite channels and the levels of political alienation among Iraqi youth?" The study aimed to identify the impact of local satellite channels on the attitudes of Iraqi youth toward the political system, the extent of their satisfaction with the system, and subsequently, the levels of political alienation resulting from their exposure to these channels. This research is a descriptive-inferential study following a survey methodology, relying on a questionnaire as a tool to collect data from a purposive sample of 100 individuals from the youth category in the city of Baghdad. The research concluded with several findings, most notably that local satellite channels contribute to increasing levels of political alienation among youth due to several reasons, including the reliance on partisan propaganda discourse, the policy of targeting political opponents, and the absence of national content.
