The Pragmatic Functions of Negation Sentences in Biblical Hebrew, The Book of Genesis as a Model

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic functions of negation sentences in the Book of Genesis based on Austin's theory of speech acts. It also seeks to identify the dominant types of speech acts associated with these sentences and how they contribute to the overall meaning of the text. The Book of Genesis was chosen for its significance among the books of the Torah and its rich linguistic features, which allow for a precise analysis of various linguistic phenomena, including negation sentences. The study employs Austin’s classification of speech acts as the framework for analyzing the functions of negation sentences in Genesis. The findings indicate that the negation particle "לא" (lo) is the most commonly used in the text, and that representative speech acts are the most prevalent within these negation sentences.
