Professional roles of social work for treating and rehabilitating drug addicts...a field study in the city of Baghdad

The issue of drug addiction is one of the most serious challenges facing modern societies, leaving negative effects that extend to individuals, families, and institutions alike. This phenomenon leads to comprehensive health deterioration among addicts, both physically and mentally, alongside social crises such as family disintegration, increased crime rates, and higher unemployment levels. Economically, this problem imposes significant burdens on states due to the costs of treating addicts and funding awareness and rehabilitation programs.
In this context, social work plays a pivotal role in combating addiction by providing psychological and social support to addicts and their families, working on their rehabilitation, and effectively reintegrating them into society. Social workers contribute to designing comprehensive treatment programs based on scientific methods such as behavioral therapy and psychological support, in collaboration with medical teams to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Preventive efforts stand out as a fundamental element in addressing this phenomenon, with community awareness of the dangers of drugs being a key axis for reducing its spread. Educational institutions, media outlets, and places of worship play a vital role in promoting positive values and raising awareness among youth about the risks of addiction.
