Internal political developments in Sudan in 2019, and the regional and international stances thereof

Abstract

The demonstrations, that took place in Sudan in April 2018 due to the deteriorating economic conditions as a result of the rise in commodity prices and the depreciation of the Sudanese currency, were the spark that led to overthrow the Omar Al-Basheer regime in 2019. The year 2019 was the end of a long ruling period of the National Congress Party in Sudan headed by Omar Hassan Al-Basheer which lasted from 1989 to 2019. This period witnessed crises and civil wars.

The Arab and regional positions on the events of Sudan were a reflection of the foreign policy pursued by the Al-Basheer regime which was based on establishing good relations with all the conflicting parties and axes in the region, and that led these parties to express nothing of their position during the period of protests and demonstrations. Later, they supported the Transitional Military Council and each of these parties attempted to keep its interests in Sudan because of its strategic importance in the Arab world and Africa.
