Abstract

Abstract

Cuneiform texts are important sources for the researchers in the study and description of the wide spectrum of cultures in Mesopotamia. Researchers have lately sought to read and decipher the symbols of the two most important languages of Mesopotamia, Sumerian and Akkadian languages. The Iraqi and foreign museums have been overwhelmed by thousands of clay tablets unearthed during the archaeological excavations. Some of these tablets have been put to investigation and the rest are yet to be deciphered.

Due to the archaeological importance of the cuneiform texts in data values and their academic importance as research references and sources for the archaeological and historical library, the two researchers have intentionally selected a number of confiscated texts at the Iraqi museum. Based on their written data, the selected texts are found to date back to the Akkadian era (2371 – 2191 B.C) which is one of the important eras in the history of ancient Iraq. The historical period of the texts goes back to the Akkadian era in general but not to a specific king of the Akkadians because of the lack of historical formula that includes names or indications that can be assigned to a specific king.

The selected texts involve economic issues revealing different aspects of the real life. The texts present valuable information on the nature of the economic activities. They include lists of the quantities of barley and food and lists of male and female slaves, lands and storage. The lists record the types and quantities of all the materials that come into and out of the warehouses with the names of the concerned individuals as they are directly related to the daily life.
