Greek philosophy and its relationship to mathematics

Abstract

Philosophy is an interconnected discipline with many other fields of knowledge. It can be said that it is related to all sciences, as all sciences ultimately aim to discover truths and investigate the essence of things. Philosophy has had a significant impact on various sciences, including mathematics. In this context, we can observe that philosophy has influenced mathematics in terms of its logical reasoning methods (results based on premises, results based on established facts). Conversely, mathematics has influenced philosophy in dealing with results and evidence as abstract symbols. The connection between philosophy and mathematics is evident in their shared use of mechanisms in their processes. Mathematicians express mathematical ideas in a symbolic language devoid of values, utilizing algebraic operations known to all. Then they interpret the results according to their real-world meanings. Philosophers, likewise, transform their ideas into logical statements, building conclusions based on premises and established facts, and further developing results on confirmed principles. The hundreds of questions posed in the philosophy of mathematics are bound to stimulate the minds of scholars and pique their curiosity to understand the reality of this world through mathematics and vice versa. Moreover, grappling with the dilemmas of modern mathematical logic, such as Hilbert's problems and Gödel's incompleteness theorems, along with logical distinctions like the Liar Paradox, Russell's Paradox, and Zeno's Paradoxes, adds depth to the study of both philosophy and mathematics.
