Abstract

The research, prepared by researcher Haider Abdul-Ridha Khayoun, aims to monitor and analyze the nature of the news coverage of the Sudan crisis that erupted on April 15, 2023, through a purposive sample that included three electronic websites (Al Arabiya Net, Al Sumaria News, and Sudan Tribune). The research is classified as a descriptive study and relied on the "content survey" method to collect and analyze journalistic materials (news, reports, articles) published over a full year, from April 15, 2023, to April 15, 2024, to ensure comprehensive coverage of all crisis developments. The analytical study revealed quantitative and qualitative details regarding the coverage mechanisms, most notably in the news frames, where the "conflict frame" led the coverage in Al Arabiya Net at (33.12%) and Sudan Tribune at (35.05%), whereas Al Sumaria News differed by relying more heavily on the "strategy frame," which ranked first at (20.88%), followed by the "responsibility frame" at (18.76%). Regarding the types of news coverage, the three websites agreed on prioritizing "objective news coverage" in the first place (with percentages ranging between 41.95% and 45.57%), as these platforms were keen to present facts and information with integrity and impartiality, without the interference of the journalist's personal opinion or editorial bias, followed in second place by "interpretive coverage." As for the styles and mechanisms of coverage, the style of "presenting facts" was by far the most prominent in providing an unambiguous and unembellished picture of the crisis's progression, while the websites also intensively utilized the mechanism of "repetition and focus" (which peaked in Sudan Tribune at 69.51%) to direct influence toward the audience and cement specific facts in their awareness, such as battles, truces, regional initiatives, and humanitarian relief efforts. Finally, regarding news sources and looking at the approved sources for gathering information (as demonstrated in the analysis of Sudan Tribune as an example), "news agencies" took the lead at (47.21%), and "official statements" came in second at (31.48%), reflecting a clear reliance on official and reliable entities in covering the conflict.
