"An Analysis of Yahya Kemal Beyatlı's Poem "Holiday Morning in Süleymaniye

Abstract

This study examines the concept of holidays in the poems of Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, specifically his poem "Eid Morning at the Süleymaniye Mosque," analyzing it thematically. The study reveals that the phenomenon of holidays, which occupies a prominent place in Turkish culture and literature, is not limited in Beyatlı's poetic world to being merely a day of religious joy, but rather a civilizational element representing historical memory, national identity, and cultural continuity. The study emphasizes that the poet connects the past and present with a single spirit and consciousness, in line with his understanding of "a future rooted in the past." The research evaluates the historical, religious, national, architectural, and musical elements in the poem "Eid Morning at the Süleymaniye Mosque" collectively, and interprets the verses in terms of language, style, and symbolic structure. In the poem, the Süleymaniye Mosque is interpreted not only as a place of worship, but also as a symbolic center representing the historical and spiritual power of Turkish Islamic civilization. It is noted that the poem explores the idea of ​​the unity of present and past generations in a single spiritual atmosphere through the gathering of worshippers in the mosque on the morning of Eid al-Fitr. The sounds of takbir (the declaration of God's greatness), the adhan (call to prayer), depictions of dawn, and images such as "a person dressed in a soldier's uniform" have been considered important symbols reflecting the nation's shared memory and collective spirit.
