Driven by the acute scarcity of surface water and mounting climate change pressures in Iraq, this study evaluates the qualitative physico-chemical characteristics of drainage water in southern Wasit Governorate to determine its suitability for agricultural irrigation as a non-conventional water resource. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical approach, seven representative water samples were collected during the 2025 summer season from key agricultural drains (East Al-Gharraf, West Al-Gharraf, Al-Mazak, Hawar, Wasit Sub-district, Al-Muwafaqiya, and Al-Husseiniya). The samples were laboratory-analyzed and benchmarked against the irrigation water standards of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and American irrigation water guidelines.
The hydrochemical results revealed significant spatial variation and elevated ion concentrations across the study area. All examined drainage waters were classified as "very hard," with Total Hardness (TH) peaking at 1,900 mg/L in the East Al-Gharraf drain. Electrical Conductivity (EC) ranged from moderate to high, reaching a maximum of 6,320 µS/cm in the Hawar drain, while the pH values indicated slight to moderate alkalinity (7.4 - 7.9), which adversely impacts micro-nutrient fixation in soils. Major ions, including Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), and Sulfates (SO_4), substantially exceeded permissible limits in most locations, whereas Magnesium (Mg) levels and turbidity remained within safe, optimal boundaries. The study concludes that high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) impose severe osmotic stress and a risk of secondary soil salinization on the region's clayey and loamy soils. Consequently, the direct application of this water should be strictly limited to salt-tolerant crops (such as barley, alfalfa, cotton, and date palms), alongside implementing integrated water management strategies, such as blending drainage water with fresh water resources, to mitigate agricultural soil degradation.
