The Impact of Jeremy Bentham’s Utilitarianism on Ethics

The doctrine of the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham is a necessary attempt to link the concept of ethics on practical basis and its connection to reality through the achievement of happiness and the common good. It rests on the fundamental idea that utility is the important criterion for judging actions; that is, human actions are right if they result in the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. In doing so, he attempts to shift the concept of ethics to a rational idea based on the balance between pleasure and suffering. He believes that moral value is built on results, not abstract principles, and that the interest of society is not achieved through traditional laws, but rather these laws can be improved and refined through their application according to the principle of the common good. Therefore, any legal act is right if it brings greater happiness to individuals, and conversely, any act is wrong if it causes them significant suffering.
