The Aesthetics of Repetition and Its Mechanisms in Textual Cohesion (The Poetry of Nour El Din Darwish as a Model)

Abstract

Textual cohesion is one of the most famous characteristics of a text, as the text cannot exist without it. Textual linguists have agreed that it is the basis for constructing and formulating a text. There is no doubt that repetition in its various forms is one of the most important tools of textual cohesion, as it may enrich poetry in terms of rhythm and internal music, the element that leads to the musical beauty of poetry and to the cohesion of sections with each other, as it results in the cohesion of lines within one section and the cohesion of sections within the poem. Based on that, this study seeks, benefiting from the descriptive-analytical and statistical approaches, to shed light on the aesthetics of repetition and its mechanisms in textual cohesion in the poetry of Noureddine Darwish, the contemporary Algerian poet, and reached results, including: Repetition in Noureddine Darwish reveals the breadth of his linguistic lexicon, the strength of his possession of language, and his creative ability to form a new language, which deviates from the familiar and goes beyond the common, to create a poetic language that surprises the recipient and breaks the horizon of expectation. He has, and it speaks in his conscience a distinct reality, which he feels comfortable with. Repetition in his poetry performs a basic function in producing and suggesting the line of meaning, and it also provides the key to the idea or feeling that dominates the poet and places it in the hands of the critic, and this key is considered one of the subconscious lights that reveal the depths of the poet. The introductory repetition in the poetry of the poet Nour El Din Darwish contributes to revealing an effectiveness capable of giving the poetic text a consistent structure, and most likely in this repetition it comes as an excerpt from a bitter reality that the poet lived, or a painful incident that affected him, so he began to empty it in a voluntary or involuntary way by repeating it.
