Iraqi Translation Students Face Challenges Translating Iraqi Proverbs into English

One of the students' most difficult assignments seems to be translating proverbs, particularly Iraqi proverbs. In the second semester of the academic year (2022-2023), thirty fourth-stage students majoring in translation at Mustansiriyah University in Iraq encountered challenges when trying to translate Iraqi proverbs into English. A quantitative technique was applied in this study. Ten Iraqi proverbs were used in the translation test that the researcher designed. The study complies with ethical guidelines and safeguards the confidentiality and anonymity of participants. The students' translations of Iraqi proverbs into English were analysed quantitatively to establish their frequency (f) and percentage (%) of usage. Translation of Iraqi proverbs into English presents linguistic and cultural challenges for Iraqi pupils. By addressing these challenges through the development of language competency, training in cultural sensitivity, and the provision of extensive teaching resources, translation education may provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to translate proverbs accurately and successfully.
