The Distorted Public Sphere in Iraqi Novels of Repression and Tyranny: The Novels of Hamid Al-Mukhtar as a Case Study

This study examines the socio-political conditions that configure the public sphere, which aims to generate a balanced relationship among individuals and subject economic, political, and cultural relations within society to discourse ethics, freedom, equality, and justice. Consequently, it investigates the causes and mechanisms that led to its collapse and distortion within the novel’s text, which simulates an imagined sociological reality.
The study is predicated on several core hypotheses, including: the absence of the prerequisite conditions for establishing a public sphere; the reading of the novel as a communicative field that empowers marginalized voices to participate in articulating collective discourse; and the premise that the distortion afflicting the public sphere was not merely a physical disruption within public institutions, but rather an expression of the regression of society’s deep communicative structure, wherein communicative rationality was supplanted by mechanisms of violence, hegemony, and exclusion.
Relying on communicative action as a primary constituent for the formation of the public sphere in society, the study delineates specific conclusions. These encompass the spatial distortion of institutions, squares, and streets which divested their natural functions and mutated into spaces of fear, repression, and tyranny as well as the psychological alienation, loss of belonging, and insecurity experienced by the novel’s characters due to the pervasive tension within the public sphere.
