Are We Truly Free? A Philosophical Study of Descartes and Kant

This study explores the concept of freedom in modern philosophy and its deep connection to human existence and identity. It examines the perspectives of two prominent modern philosophers: the French thinker René Descartes, known for his rationalist philosophy and method of systematic doubt, through which he developed his notion of freedom as an act of will—specifically, the “will of indifference,” which operates independently of reason; and the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, whose idealist and critical philosophy led him to apply his practical reasoning to the concept of freedom, seeking appropriate solutions to its philosophical dilemmas. The research adopts an analytical approach, examining the original philosophical texts and interpretations offered by both philosophers, in order to highlight their distinct views on freedom. By the end of the study, a number of conclusions are drawn regarding the essence of freedom and its intrinsic link to the human condition, as emphasized by both Descartes and Kant.
