The Arabic Influence on the Formation of the Hebrew Lexicon: A Case Study of (Judeo-Arabic) Texts

The Jews developed their language through their interaction with Muslims, learning Arabic and its literature, and refining their own linguistic skills and tastes. They observed how Muslims revered their language due to its religious significance as the language of the Quran and the Hadith. Consequently, they emulated the Muslims by establishing grammatical rules for their language. Bilingual dictionaries emerged, listing terms from the Old Testament alongside their Arabic equivalents. The recent discovery of these dictionaries written in Judeo-Arabic in the Cairo Geniza revealed that they served as the basis for Arabic translations of the Bible. Although Hebrew grammar originated in the East, linguistic studies flourished among the Jews of Al-Andalus. Some even used Arabic letters to write Old Testament texts, incorporating the Hebrew vowel system.
Samples: Hebrew dictionaries written in (Judeo-Arabic), following the linguistic schools of the Rabbinites and the Karaites. One type is known as 'Al-Gharib' (The Strange), and another is developed according to Arabic linguistics, known as (The Integrated Dictionary).
Objectives: To determine the origin of Arabic terms in Hebrew lexicography, aiming to establish inter-linguistic connections in modern Semitic linguistics. This includes exploring the structuralist approach to language teaching through Arabic lexicography, its origins, and its influence on Hebrew dictionaries, and to develop a methodology for editing works written in Arabic.
