Representations of Violence in the Language of the Novel: Analyzing Textual Thresholds and Narrative Content, with 'Shutaan al-Ramad' as a Case Study

Abstract

     Since literature is a reflection of the state of society and a clear expression of the lives of its members, it was necessary for writers to monitor the most important issues that emerged from the Iraq crisis, especially Mosul. The novel Shattan al-Ash interacted with the event and adapted its language in order to produce connotations that express violence and generate meanings that the themes reflect. It is essential for the novel as a whole to rise up and be referred to, and the novelist (Ali Awad Abdullah) thus reveals through language the nature and dimensions of violence in its various realistic manifestations. Which in turn is reflected in the textual thresholds as a dominant semantic authority, with a reverse extension to and from the text, and transforming what is in its brief, condensed nature in form and inference into a narrative text complete with idea and presentation, embodying his ideas and visions, and revealing the truth of the hidden idea (violence) behind the curtain of the threshold of the title
