Occidentalism in Iraqi contemporary painting

Abstract

The research marked (the surprising in contemporary Iraqi painting) consisted of four chapters. The first chapter was devoted to the methodological framework of the research. The research problem ended with the following question: What is the surprising? What are its representations in contemporary Iraqi painting? It also included the aim of the research, its importance and the need for it. As for the second chapter, it was devoted to the theoretical framework, which dealt with two topics: The first came under the title of Understanding and Growing Up, while the second dealt with contemporary Iraqi painting. While the third chapter is devoted to research procedures, the researcher has chosen (3) artworks in an intentional manner and analyzed by adopting the descriptive approach (qualitative content analysis method) based on the indicators of the theoretical framework. As for the fourth chapter, it was devoted to the results of the research, including: 1- The astonishment in contemporary Iraqi painting represents love and desire to deal with Western artistic subjects to express the cultural environment of the West. 2- Experimenting in contemporary Iraqi artistic styles has contributed to creating representations of artistic astonishment by addressing Western plastic arts issues. Conclusions: 1- The ancient civilization of the first generation cannot be erased, even if later civilizations produced quantitative and qualitative changes in the value and nature of the artistic achievement. 2- The environmental heritage is the main factor in inspiring the artist. The research ended with recommendations, proposals and a list of sources.
