تتناول قصيدة قافية البحّار القديم للشاعر صموئيل تايلور كولريدج موضوعات الخطيئة والذنب والقصاص والخلاص. ويُبيّن البحث أن قيام البحّار بقتل طائر القطرس يمثّل انتهاكًا للعلاقة الجامعة بين الإنسان والطبيعة والإله، ويُعدّ بذلك خرقًا أخلاقيًا جسيمًا. كما يدرس البحث كيفية تصوير كولريدج للعقاب بوصفه عملية نفسية وروحية أكثر من كونه مجرد نتيجة فعلية، معتمداً في ذلك على الرمزية في القصيدة، والصور الخارقة للطبيعة، والموضوعات الدينية. إن معاناة البحّار، ووحدته، وعجزه عن الصلاة، ثم إعادة سرد قصته، جميعها تمثل مراحل من التطور الأخلاقي والتوبة. كما يتناول البحث الدلالات الرمزية لكل من طائر القطرس، والناسك، والطيّار، مع إبراز أدوارهم في رحلة البحّار نحو الخلاص. ويخلص إلى أن كولريدج يصوّر الألم بوصفه شكلًا من أشكال التربية الروحية، يغرس احترام الطبيعة، والتواضع أمام القوة الإلهية، وإدراك ترابط جميع الكائنات الحية.
