الملخص

Examining the Syriac translation of the Greek Gospels, and particularly the translation of verbs used in Greek, is a study that is warranted. It might seem straightforward, however, considering the complex verb systems of Greek and Syriac languages necessitates further examination and discussion. Verbs in both languages ​​possess morphological elements and grammatical variations in Mood, Voice, Tense, and Aspect. Thus, it is not surprising that much of what Syriac translates requires explanation and clarification. The Greek imperative verb, with its diverse forms and meanings, makes its translation somewhat indirect. To be more precise, this study considers the passive imperative in in the Gospel of Mark. As is well known, the passive imperative is not used in Arabic. However, it is used in Syriac, where the passive imperative can be formed and used. But, translating the passive imperative from Greek into Syriac is so clear. Syriac employs more than one method to translate the Greek passive imperative in order to convey the meaning of the original text. Sometimes, Syriac is compelled to alter the verb's voice, its mood, or even the verb itself, to present a clear and understandable text for the Syriac reader. Hence, this study seeks to examine the methods used by both the Peshitta and the Harklean versions to translate the passive imperative in the Gospel of Mark.
