The Adjective in Sibawayh's Work: A Pragmatic Study Focused on the Cooperative Principle and Deixis

ASibawayh's book served as an ideal subject for studying language use, as it relied on interpreting the speech of the Arabs and what they said, while they were as concerned with meanings as they were with words. Thus, aspects of pragmatics can be discerned within it, as the context of language is the situation itself. ((Rhetoric and pragmatics agree in their reliance on language as a tool for exercising action on the recipient, based on the fact that the linguistic text as a whole is a text within a situation)) (Fadl, 1992, 89). We chose the adjective (na't), as we found in it the Arabs' usage as documented by Sibawayh in the examples he provided, which amounted to twelve instances. The term "attribute" (sifah) appeared alongside the adjective in one hundred and eighty-five instances, taking into account both sides of the discourse, according to the meanings that can be understood in light of their present connotations at the time of utterance.
Since the adjective is originally a nominal word, this necessitated that the researcher not replicate all paths of pragmatics, such as indexicals and what they represent in proper nouns, pronouns, and adverbs, conversational implicature, as well as speech acts, as the accomplishment ultimately leads to action, except to the extent that it is related to the adjective in some examples. The research was limited to the principle of cooperation and indexicals.
The study consisted of two sections, an introduction, and a preliminary section. The preliminary section included the definition of pragmatics and its most important topics. Following the preliminary section, the first section included a study of the adjective between security from ambiguity and the principle of cooperation.
As for the second section, it studied the indexical dimension in the adjective. This study concluded with several findings that the research yielded, and then a list of references.
