Abstract

This research explores the events in the novel "The Iron Crown" (כתר הברזל) by the author Aharon Appelfeld, published in 2016. The novel is set during the years leading up to and during World War I and revolves around the character Peter Stein. Peter excelled in the training course of the Austro-Hungarian army and went on to lead soldiers in battles, ultimately receiving the highest honor "The Iron Crown." After retiring from the military, he quickly discovers that the system, peace, and security are nothing more than an illusion, as dark and destructive forces lurk beneath, seeking an explosive outlet. In this backdrop, Peter tries to understand his life and the lives of those close to him, including his parents, sister, and friends in the army. He recalls images from his memory and examines them deeply to understand them better. The novel addresses physical and mental pain, fear, and the path to God during challenging times. It ends in a murder incident where Peter finds himself forced to confront the reality that he may have chosen the wrong mission. Instead of addressing the Jewish past, Peter sold his brothers into slavery (similar to the story of Joseph), and the books he had collected ended up in a church library in the land of persecuted Jews. He discovers that he has fully committed to the same path of Jewish history that led to the death of his father and many other Jews.
