The Impact of Cognitive Openness on Behavior Change and Avoidance of Violence Among Fifth-Grade Secondary School Students in Wasit Governorate

The researcher aims through this study to examine the effect of mental and intellectual openness on altering student behavior from a tendency toward violence to a tendency toward tolerance, forgiveness, and openness in interpersonal relationships, both among students themselves and with others outside the school environment. The study also explores the implications of this shift in behavior for building future community bonds. The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical method, as it best suits the research objectives. A random sample of 112 students from secondary schools in Wasit Governorate was selected. Based on prior literature and the theories of Hartland and Stanfig, a scale was developed with two main dimensions: the first measures cognitive openness and includes 23 items; the second assesses behavior and the avoidance of violence, including 21 items related to self-forgiveness, tolerance toward others, and openness in attitudes and ideas, with five response options reflecting the opinions of each participant. The study concluded that there is an acceptable level of cultural and societal awareness, maturity, and perception among secondary students. They exhibit a good level of cognitive openness that enables them to engage in dialogue and discussion within inherited or acquired cultural frameworks. This openness suggests a strong will to practice forgiveness in its various forms and to distance themselves from different manifestations of violence.
