يطبق هذا البحث منهج تحليل الخطاب النقدي (CDA) لتحليل الخطابات السياسية الديمقراطية الغربية المعاصرة، مُبينًا كيف يستخدم القادة اللغة لتصوير المواطنين كأفراد فاضلين ومتحدين، بينما يُظهرون المعارضين والعناصر الأجنبية كخطر على السلطة الوطنية والتراث الثقافي والاستقرار الاقتصادي. يدرس البحث خطابات فيكتور أوربان، ونايجل فاراج، وأليكسيس تسيبراس، وجان لوك ميلانشون، من خلال منهج فان ديك الاجتماعي المعرفي ومنهج ووداك التاريخي الخطابي، خلال الفترة 2015-2025. يُظهر البحث أن الشعبويين اليمينيين يستخدمون القومية الحضارية والسيادة المناهضة للنخبوية لخلق تهديدات، بينما يركز الشعبويون اليساريون على عدم المساواة الاقتصادية وسلطة الأوليغارشية والتضامن الدولي. تتبع الاستراتيجيات المُطبقة متطلبات وطنية محددة، إذ تتناول الهوية المجرية ما بعد الشيوعية، والشوفينية البريطانية في مجال الرعاية الاجتماعية، والديناميات السياسية اليونانية ما بعد التقشف، والحركات الجمهورية الفرنسية المناهضة للإمبريالية. يُظهر البحث أن الخطاب الشعبوي يحتوي على نمط معارض أساسي، ومع ذلك فإن كلماته الفعلية تعتمد على مواقف محددة، ويمكن أن يتغير معناه بناءً على وجهات النظر الأيديولوجية.
