لقد أجمعت الدراسات السردية الحديثة على أن وظيفة الراوي في النص السردي لا تقتصر على سرد الأحداث إلى المتلقي ، وإنما يتخطى هذه الوظيفة الرئيسة لينهض بوظائف أخرى مهمة جدا ، وأن هذه الوظائف بحسب رأي ( فلاديمير بروب) لاتتحدد في صفاته وخصائصه الذاتية، وإنما تتحدد بالأعمال التي يقوم بها وأن الباحثين لم يضعوا عددًا ثابتًا لها، أو التركيز على بعضها من دون بعضها الآخر ، وإنما اعطوا الأولوية لمعرفتها؛ لأهميتها في تحليل النص السردي وفهمه ، وتوضيح سلطة الخطاب المدروس وما يشتمل عليه من رؤى ووجهات نظر .
