Abstract

Philosophy has always sought to take a conscious stance toward reality. Therefore, the question of reality and its answer has occupied a significant place in philosophical writings. However, it has evolved throughout the long history of philosophy, taking a new turn in our contemporary era. One of its forms is the question of the possibility of the total disappearance of reality according to Jean Baudrillard, or complete detachment from it, and the examination of the nature of our postmodern world. Another aspect is the investigation of how the postmodern relates to reality, according to Deleuze and Pierre Lévy, or the exploration of how the postmodern ascends to reality. Within this context, the profound impact of media on shaping our perception of reality, particularly through screens, cannot be underestimated. The study aims to shed light on the significant influence of media, especially screens, in our understanding and transformation of culture and social values. Our perception of the postmodern reality is described as being more real than reality itself, as images become our measure of truth, surpassing the actual reality in terms of realism. The importance of this study lies in its attempt to highlight the capabilities of the postmodern – the communicative discourse or the discourse of images and its role in shaping individual and social consciousness. Images penetrate our emotional senses and intertwine with our cognitive structure, either elevating it or dominating it. Its impact extends beyond changing our social fabric, delving into our interpretation of the world and our knowledge of it. The postmodern virtual reality possesses elements of intensity and fascination that make it surpass the old reality. Therefore, the virtual becomes the metaphysical principle responsible for shaping the individual and social consciousness of contemporary civilization.
